Less is more at Viridian Nutrition

PHOTO CAPTION: Salma Dawood, Technical Advisor – Already in sustainable glass and cardboard, expect even less packaging from Viridian Nutrition during 2019.

Look out for your favourite vitamins in new, smaller packaging. Inspired by Sir David Attenborough and the public’s appetite for all things eco, Viridian Nutrition is reducing packaging on 35% of the company’s 300+ individual supplements, resulting in a 12.5 tonne reduction in total packaging weight in 2019.

Already an award-winning ethical company with environmental commitments since its launch in 1999, reducing the size of the glass bottles to more closely match the content within, “just makes sense” says founder and MD Cheryl Thallon.

“Of the 318 individual lines, 111 will be shrinking to a smaller size bottle during 2019. Capsule counts will not be changing, the packaging will simply be more fitted. We will continue to use amber glass, protecting the contents from heat and light.”

In addition to the glass reduction, through 2018 Viridian has been transitioning the tamper-evident over-seal on bottles from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to plant-based polylactic acid (PLA).

“During 2019, all bottles shipped from our Northamptonshire HQ will feature the plant-based over-seal. PLA isn’t the final word on sustainable packaging, but it’s progress from the PET,” explains Cheryl.

“Recycling and industrial composting services aren’t consistently provided across local authorities and councils, so ensuring a completely sustainable chain is complicated for suppliers, but at Viridian, we’re constantly striving to lessen our footprint on the environment.”
