The theme for Earth Day 2021 is 'Restore Our Earth' and at Viridian it's the perfect time to review our ongoing commitment to supporting the future of our planet. Your organisation has the same opportunity to be part of the solution, by signing up to the Terra Carta.

A roadmap to recovery

The ‘Terra Carta (or earth charter) – for Nature, People & Planet’ sets a green roadmap to 2030, towards an inspiring inclusive, prosperous and sustainable future for the present and future generations.

It outlines almost 100 actions for businesses of all sizes to adopt across 10 transformative areas covering the creation of sustainable industries to harnessing nature-based solutions into their portfolios and supply chains.

Environmentalism has always remained high on HRH The Prince of Wales’ agenda – which runs parallels with the supplement company’s ethics. Viridian believes the health of the planet and the health of the individual are inextricably linked and follows the ethical principle ‘care for others as we care for ourselves’.

Viridian – ethics start with the company ownership

Viridian Nutrition - Marigold fields Viridian ethics start from the seed to the recycling bank.

Viridian’s ethical philosophy is fused into every aspect of the company from the seed to the recycling bank, from taking responsibility for its packaging and ingredient sourcing. In particular, favouring organic growing to avoid the use of potentially harmful pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals – and having the 100% non-GMO guarantee. This offers the best chance of long-term good health to people and to the planet.

A closer inspection reveals the supplement company has supported the work of environmental charities through its Viridian’s Charity Donation Programme since being founded 21 years ago. Viridian has been a long-time donator to The Prince’s Trust. Viridian proudly holds the title of the world’s first vitamin company to be certified palm-oil free. More recently Viridian sponsored a young eco-champion on his journey to Borneo to investigate the impact of the palm oil industry.

The interdependence between human health and planetary health

Prince Charles’ message is clear – we must put back more into the planet than we take out. Ultimately, the survival of earth and all who live on it depends on taking swift actions.

In the foreword to the Terra Carta, Prince Charles writes: “The interdependence between human health and planetary health has never been more clear. As we start a new decade, it is time to focus on the future we wish to build, and indeed leave, for generations to come.

“Humanity has made incredible progress over the past century, yet the cost of this progress has caused immense destruction to the planet that sustains us. We simply cannot maintain this course indefinitely. To build a productive and sustainable future, it is critical that we accelerate and mainstream sustainability into every aspect of our economy.”

He believes companies must mobilise their innovation, expertise, scale and resources and make an ethical investment into the health of the planet. The Terra Carta initiative intends to raise £7.5billion towards sustainable projects.

A Magna Carta for Nature

The foundations of the Terra Carta has been laid down by the historic Magna Carta, a royal charter, which 800 years ago inspired a belief in the fundamental rights and liberties of people.

In the charter, Prince Charles writes: “As we strive to imagine the next 800 years of human progress, the fundamental rights and value of Nature must represent a step-change in our ‘future of industry’ and ‘future of economy’ approach. With this in mind, Nature, of which we are an integral part, lies at the heart of the ‘Terra Carta’.”

A call to the industry

Viridian founder and MD Cheryl Thallon urges the industry to join Prince Charles’ earth charter.

Supporting Prince Charles’ call for rapid action and a unified approach to planetary health, Viridian’s MD and founder Cheryl Thallon is urging fellow leaders in the industry to join Viridian and commit to the intentions of the Terra Carta.

“Viridian is a long-time admirer of Prince Charles’ position on addressing sustainability and climate change and his work as a life-long environmentalist,” says Cheryl. “We believe the Terra Carta’s ambitions resonates with Viridian’s ethical principles and philosophy of protecting the health of our planet and safeguarding it for future generations. We are proud to be among the first to join Prince Charles’ dynamic charter.

“However, it is essential we act collectively to make any fundamental difference and urge other colleagues in the industry to pledge their commitment to the Terra Carta.”
