Friday January 21, 2022

Each year increasing numbers of people are introducing more plant based options into their diet for reasons of health, animal welfare or environment. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian - or just plain curious - read our guide on simple ways to follow a vegan lifestyle.

1. Shop seasonally. This encourages us to eat lots of different foods.

2. Consider frozen and dried food options, to maximise dietary variety.

3. Batch cooking and slow cooker recipes make food preparation easy.

4. Grow your own fresh herbs and salad leaves. These are great crops to start with, pop a few seeds in some compost, place on a windowsill, maintain moisture in the soil and soon you will be harvesting nutrient dense greens.

6. Eat wholefoods and avoid processed, sugar, salt and fat laden foods. Peas can make up part of a vegan’s protein source.

7. Chances are, if you do not recognise an ingredient name it’s best to avoid it. Junk foods are junk, vegan or not.

8. Periodic blood tests may be necessary to track iron levels, especially in menstruating females.

9. Cork is a great leather alternative for bags, wallets and shoes.

10. Items made from bamboo have exploded. From toothbrushes to lunchboxes and coffee cups, this flexible and sustainable shrub reduces the need for plastic.
