Athletes of all abilities were raring to go at the ninth Viridian Daventry Triathlon, after a break of a year.

From seeking fresh challenges to triumphant triathlon finishes, the Viridian Daventry Triathlon held in Northamptonshire, received a welcome return from race-goers, organisers at Rugby Triathlon Club and the local community.

The 2021 September event, saw more than 230 entrants taking part in the sprint distance triathlon encompassing: 400m pool swim at Daventry Leisure Centre, 20km cycle through the rolling Northamptonshire countryside and a 5km run around the scenic Daventry Country Park.

The Viridian Daventry Triathlon is one of the highlights in the regional sporting calendar. The annual race is sponsored by ethical vitamin company Viridian Nutrition and Sheaf Street Health Store, an independent health food retailer, both in Daventry.

Viridian’s marketing and events manager Tom Welch, said: “We were really excited to hold the event for the community as it enabled people to show off the hard work they’ve put in. More importantly, this event encouraged people from complete novices to professionals to begin making small steps or to continue with their health and fitness journey. A massive well done to everyone who took part.”

Taking a well earned rest

The event also saw Viridian’s MD and founder Cheryl Thallon entering for the first time ever as part of a relay team. Aged 59, she began training in January and finished the 5K run in 39 minutes.

Cheryl said: “I’ve spent the last four decades sitting at a desk, and decided this was the year I had to make a proper investment in my fitness. I committed to the ‘Couch to 5k’ programme and registering for the Daventry Triathlon kept me focussed. I’m so proud to be part of the Viridian team, and want them to be proud of me too.”

This year all entrants were given a specially designed organic cotton triathlon T-shirt. All finishers received a new medal unveiled for the 2021 event made from sustainable wood, with moving parts, and an organic cotton lanyard.

The triathlon was in support of local charity Friends of St Cross, which supports the hospital, community and mental health services in Rugby.

Rugby Triathlon Club race director Ed Slater, said: “September the 12th saw the return of the Viridian Daventry Triathlon. With nearly 240 competitors, it proved to be a fantastic morning's worth of racing.

“With many of competitors from local triathlon, running, cycling and swimming clubs, all competing for individual and team trophies. It was also great to see over a quarter of the competitors achieving their first triathlon, some already looking for the next one they can race in.

“The event made special by the support of the marshalls (nearly 90), the enthusiasm of the spectators, and by the support given by our Viridian sponsors. Our participants received medals, T-shirts and trophies, all making people smile.”
