Why Diet Matters - Part three

In part one of this series we looked at the science behind the effect of diet in the body, and the signs that you could be nutrient deficient. In part two, we discussed how to optimise several important body processes. Let's put all of that knowledge to good use now in a design for a 'Healthy Plate'

What is the right diet? Variety is the key but in truth, it is not healthy to think that there is a perfect diet.

Everyone can assess their own diet for opportunities to tweak and alter food choices to improve total nutrient intake and the following tips will help to get the most nutrition from food:
  • Eat 7 or more different vegetables daily, choose as many different coloured vegetables as possible.
  • Include 2-5 portions of different types and coloured fruit daily.
  • Include protein rich foods at each meal, such as fish, poultry, meat and legumes.
  • Equally fats are necessary daily, consider oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado, olives or omega-3 dominant nutritional oils.
  • Energy is delivered from foods such as potatoes, root vegetables, rice and wholegrains.
  • Finally, add a sprinkle of herbs and spices, which are turbo charged with nutrition.

Viridian's Healthy PlateHalve your plate with vegetables and salad items, add one or two protein rich foods so a further quarter of the plate is covered and in the final quarter, add the energy giving foods - carbohydrates This can then be sprinkled with fats, herbs and spices and et voilà, a highly nutritious meal.

We've seen that nutrient dense foods are required to provide the necessary wealth of nutrition and are important to our health. Eating a whole-food diet gives a definite health advantage, however everyday life can be time restricted and due to seasonal availability getting a full spectrum of nutrients in your diet can be difficult. Whatever your situation, food supplements can offer a useful solution to gaps in the diet, whether it’s for mum, dad or the kids, a multivitamin formulation ensures the provision of micronutrients known to contribute to human health.

Your local health food store will be able to help you with foods, advice for special diets and food supplements. For more information on how to contact Viridian Nutrition's team of qualified nutritionists, please consult our FAQ
