Viridian names Black Seed Ingredient of the Year 2019

Leading ethical vitamins company Viridian Nutrition has unveiled Black Seed (Nigella sativa) as the Viridian Ingredient of the Year 2019.

Experts at Viridian Nutrition have forecast the ancient black seed, revered around the world, to be significant in the field of nutrition in the year ahead.

For more than 2,000 years the black seed, a plant from the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family, has been traditionally used by various cultures as a natural remedy and to generally improve health. The ancient Egyptians knew and used the black seed and described it as a panacea. It is believed that Tutankamun had a bottle of black seed oil in his tomb.

One of the most noted writers of the Islamic Golden Age, Ibn Seena, known in the West as Avicenna, and regarded as one of the most significant physicians, astronomers, thinkers and writers of his time, referred to the black seed as the seed ‘that stimulates the body's energy and helps recovery from fatigue’.

The Nigella sativa plant originates from Western Asia and grows to about 16-24 inches in height and has white flowers when in bloom. The Egyptian-sourced tiny jet-black, sharp-cornered rectangular seeds are most prized for the preparation of supplements.

In modern times, its health properties have attracted considerable scientific interest. Chief among them are studies on its respiratory and cardiovascular activity, trials on relieving symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hayfever) and new research looking into blood sugar regulation.

After reviewing a vast array of nutrition and herbal research, and speaking with leading influencers, Viridian Nutrition has duly recognised black seed, naming it the ‘Viridian Ingredient of the Year 2019’ in further anticipation of its positive influence on nutrition and health.

Viridian Nutrition’s Technical Director Aimée Benbow, said: “A key part of my role is nurturing our relationships with growers and extractors, and reviewing latest research around the world on the properties of botanicals and nutrients in human health. A sleeping giant in the field of beneficial botanicals is black seed, with a persuasive body of research and the potential to bring enormous nutritional benefit.”
